Why is Aromatherapy Beneficial?

To first get a good idea of what is safe and effective aromatherapy we need to look at the quality of essential oils and scents we are choosing to use in our homes.

While candles, air fresheners, and some other essential oils can smell great, they often tent to do more harm than good. I know it sounds crazy to hear… why would companies choose to use products they know will harm their users over time? Well for one, it is cheaper to cut corners and use chemical ingredients that mimic natural scents to increase profit margins.

Here’s a few reasons why conventional candles, and air fresheners need to leave your home, and life, stat!

Fragrance
Generally undisclosed ingredients linked to reproductive and developmental toxicity. It is an umbrella term that covers up 4,000 TOXIC ingredients. Laws regarding this are so loose that this means companies do not have to disclose all of the chemicals that make up their fragrance because they consider them a “trade secret.”

Formaldehyde
Many conventional candles, air fresheners, and fragrances use this - which is a known carcinogen aka cancer causing.

Toluene
This is the stuff that gives you a headache while you are in a nail salon.

Parrafin Wax
This is a petroleum byproduct that releases the same chemicals that are in diesel fuel emissions when burned. - EW!

Benzene
A known carcinogen aka cancer causing.

Some call fragrance “the real F word.” Chemicals that make up fragrance are very commonly parabens, carcinogens, and chemicals that are VERY harmful to us, especially over time. A large number of people experience health effects when they are exposed to fragrance. The most common negative experiences are headaches and respiratory problems.

When we burn candles and spray air fresheners (yes- the plug in ones too), we are releasing these chemicals into our homes!

Why should we care?

In our homes, WE are the keepers and rulers of our sanctuary. WE are the ones who decide what products we use, what is in the air, and what we put onto our bodies. We are responsible to make healthy decisions for ourselves, to live in harmony and health.

“But candles and air fresheners are small?”

Unfortunately, over time and prolonged use, air fresheners and candles contribute to our toxic burden.

I DO have good news for you though. There is a very simple, easy, effective, and wonderful alternative to these harmful candles and air fresheners - diffusing high-quality essential oils!

Alternatives to candles would be to find pure beeswax candles, as they do not release harmful VOCs.

What are VOC’s?
”Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted as gases from certain solids or liquids. VOCs include a variety of chemicals, some of which may have short- and long-term adverse health effects. Concentrations of many VOCs are consistently higher indoors (up to ten times higher) than outdoors. VOCs are emitted by a wide array of products numbering in the thousands.

PA does regulate VOCs in some household products under the Clean Air Act (CAA); however, the regulations that we have promulgated for VOCs in architectural coatings and consumer products are in place only because many VOCs photochemically react in the atmosphere to produce ozone, a component of smog. From the standpoint of indoor air quality, the definition of VOCs and their regulation under the CAA sometimes causes confusion. The reason is that some chemicals that are toxic are exempt from the VOC regulations because they are not considered to be photochemically reactive. Therefore, some products that are labeled as "no VOC" or "low VOC" under the CAA can actually contain volatile organic chemicals that are toxic, sometimes at high levels.

While we do regulate VOCs in outdoor air, from an indoor air perspective, EPA has no authority to regulate household products (or any other aspect of indoor air quality). We have no authority under the CAA; our authorities in indoor air, mainly from Title IV of the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act (SARA), are to do research and to disseminate information to the public. Even if we had authority to regulate indoor air quality, it would be difficult to regulate household (or other) products because we have no authority to collect information on the chemical content of products in the marketplace (nor does any Federal Agency).”
